Amritsar, July 14 The first heavy spell of rain has come as a blessing for city residents as well as farmers. Farmers are happy as their worries of field irrigation have been reduced to a great extent. Many farmers reported that their tubewells remained switched off on Sunday as the fields received enough rainfall in the early morning. Residents got the much-needed respite from the scorching heat as the weather remained pleasant throughout the day. The city and surroundings villages had witnessed scanty rainfall in the wee hours in the last two days and then the clouds disappeared. The weather became even more unbearable due to the increased humidity levels. Shamsher Singh, a farmer from Attari, said, “The showers so far have been elusive this season. Last year, the rains had started comparatively earlier and had been of great help for paddy growers. Even at this stage, showers are good for crops and it would be of much help.” He, however, added that now farmers would be worried about pest as they usually come after the rains as humidity levels increase. Chief Agriculture Officer Vinay Kumar said, “The rain is good for the paddy crop in more than one way. It not only helps in keeping the fields inundated but also helps in washing off the eggs of worms and pests from leaves.”— TNS
