Undertrial dies, family alleges murder

Amritsar, July 16 An undertrial died under mysterious circumstances in the Central Jail on Tuesday morning. He has been identified as Jajbir Singh (26) of Bhalla Colony. His family has termed it a murder. It said the police had been creating hurdles in him getting bail. Family members said Jajbir talked to them on phone on Monday evening and he had not reported any illness. He was arrested by the Chehharta police on June 13. The deceased work as a property dealer with his father. The family claimed that Jajbir Singh was called to the police station on June 13 in connection with a “false” complaint lodged by a youth of the locality. A family member, Amandeep Singh, said, “The police initially said that he would be released, but he was sent to jail in evening. Though the others arrested in the case got bail, the police created hurdles in his case.” He alleged that on Tuesday morning as they were going to court in connection with his bail, they received a phone call from the jail that Jajbir had died. He alleged that the police did not allow them to see the body till evening. ADCP Jagjit Singh Walia said the exact reason behind the death would be ascertained only after receiving the postmortem report. He said a board of doctors had conducted the autopsy and the report would be received within a few days. He said an inquiry had already been initiated. The deceased Jajbir Singh (26) of Bhalla Colony was a property dealer. He was arrested a month ago in connection with a case. His family said the police had been creating hurdles in getting him out on bail. Now, the police are waiting for the postmortem examination report.
