He has accused several people of drug peddling due to which the latter have planned to eliminate him, he says. He claims that the accused have given ‘supari’ (contract) to criminals for killing him.

Accuses peddlers of planning his elimination Amritsar, August 17 Nishan Singh, former sarpanch of Dhyanpur village, fears for his life as he says that several persons, whom he has accused of drug peddling, have planned to eliminate him. He has complained to the police, informing that the accused have given ‘supari’ (contract) to criminals for killing him only because he has been working for eradicating the scourge of drugs from his village. The police have registered a case against Balkar Singh, Gulzar Singh, Meeta and an unidentified person under Sections 115, 120-B of the IPC and Sections 21, 22, 29, 30, 61, 85 of the NDPS Act against them. Nishan Singh mentioned in his statement to the police that he had been organising awareness campaigns against drug abuse under the concerted drive of the state government. He said he involved many youth from his village in the campaign that didn’t go down well with the accused who had been allegedly involved in drug peddling. “On August 1 evening, I was having a walk outside my residence when Meeta, along with an unidentified person, started following me on a bike. I have been continuously followed by unknown persons,” he said. Paramjit Singh, SHO, Khilchian police station, said the matter was under investigation. He said no arrest had been made so far. “The police are committed to ensure the security of those fighting the drug menace and helping the police in nabbing the suspects,” he said. He said appropriate action would be taken after a thorough probe.
