Manmeet Singh Gill Amritsar, September 8 Residents of many localities in the city are living under constant fear due to high-tension electricity wires dangling low over their roofs. Many residents have lost their lives after coming in contact with these wires in the past few years. Only three days ago, a seven-year-old child was electrocuted in the Tarn Taran as she accidently came in contact with these wires. Politicians often assure the public of shifting the wires but when they are elected these politicians forget to fulfill their promises. In localities like as New Dashmesh Nagar, Indira Colony, Mohakampura, Azad Nagar and many others on Majitha Road, such wires can be seen hanging over the roofs of houses. On the other hand, the Power Corporation asks people to bear the expenses for shifting the wires. The corporation alleges that the power transmission lines were erected prior to the setting up of these localities. The residents say that it is the responsibility of the government. Harsih Kumar, a resident, said, “Even at the time of 2017 Assembly elections, the leaders had promised to get these wires shifted.” He said at some points the wires were just a few feet away from houses. “We do not go to the rooftops for fear of the wires. Though many accidents have occurred here, nothing has been done,” said another resident Kewal Singh. The residents said the high-tension wires in Indira Colony were hanging too low. A senior official of the Power Corporation said, “There had been talks between the government and corporation for shifting the wires. But the government would have to bear the expenses, which, if paid, the corporation can hasten the process.” Another official on the condition of anonymity said as per the norms, the residents would have to bear the expenses if they wanted shifting of an electricity line.
