ACP to probe ‘killing’ of Ludhiana resident

In-laws allege he set himself ablaze over dispute Amritsar, September 15 Days after a Ludhiana-based Rakesh Kumar (43) was allegedly killed by his wife and in-laws in Rani Ka Bagh area, the police have marked a probe to Assistant Commissioner of Police (ACP) (west) to ascertain facts. Mother of suspect Krishna Sharma had demanded an impartial probe from senior police officials, alleging that her daughter Pooja (wife of deceased Rakesh Kumar), along with her brother Manoj, his wife Savita and Raghav, had been falsely implicated in the case. In her complaint, she said a CCTV footage revealed that Rakesh committed suicide by setting himself ablaze over the matrimonial dispute with her daughter. She alleged that he had threatened them to falsely implicate them after committing suicide. Her family had given prior information to the police about this. But before the police could take any action, Rakesh ended his life, she said. ACP (west) Dev Dutt said: “Every evidence regarding the case is open and recorded in CCTV cameras. Nothing is hidden.” The police had booked Pooja, Manoj, Raghav and Savita on a complaint submitted by deceased’s father Kherati Lal. He had stated to the police that Rakesh had come to Amritsar to persuade his wife to return home, who had been living with her mother for the past one month. He had alleged that Manoj thrashed his son and later set him ablaze. Before he reached there, people were dousing the fire with water. He was taken to Civil Hospital and then to Guru Nanak Dev Hospital. From there, he was shifted to a private hospital where he succumbed. The incident occurred in the intervening night of Friday and Saturday when they were returning to their hotel after having dinner at a restaurant. The snatchers targeted the couple identified as Karlos Hubroto Muskri and his wife Maria Laurdis near Bhandari Bridge. They stated the police that two motorcycle-borne persons came on a bike and snatched their carry bags containing diplomatic identity cards, three credit cards, two debit cards, Rs 1,000 in Indian currency and mobile phone. Laurdes had a wallet having her passport, diplomatic ID, Rs 3000 cash, debit cards and other important belongings. He alleged that the accused also snatched the belongings of his friend’s wife who was accompanying them. The police have registered a case under Section 379-B IPC in this connection. Neeraj Kumar, SHO Rambagh police station said the incident occurred late at night. They had looked many CCTV cameras in the area but without any success. He said further investigations were underway. Snatchings have been a bane of the holy city as it has become an order of the day. Newly- appointed Police Commissioner Sukhchain Singh Gill had expressed his concern while adding that new strategies would be made to curb snatchings and nail the robbers. “We are framing strategies to arrest the snatchers, besides enhancing police patrolling during nights,” he said.
