Rain adds to worries of paddy growers

Rain increases the moisture content of the soil, which would create problems in operation of heavy combine harvester machines. The farmers said early ripening varieties of paddy were ready for harvesting any time soon. Meanwhile, the Agriculture Department has warned farmers against harvesting crop unless it is fully ripened otherwise it would cause trouble in marketing of produce. The officials said the permissible limit of moisture in food grains was 14% and the grain having moisture content above this would not be procured by government agencies.

Amritsar, September 16 Moderate rain in the area this morning has increased the worries of farmers, who are getting ready for harvesting of paddy crops in their fields. The harvesting season is expected to begin within a week as vegetable growers are the first ones to do so as they require the fields vacant at the earliest for sowing vegetables. Rain increases the moisture content of the soil, which would create problems in operation of heavy combine harvester machines. “We expect that there would be no more rainfall in the coming days. If it rains, trouble would multiply,” said Baljinder Singh of Bohru village. The farmers said early ripening varieties of paddy were ready for harvesting any time soon.
