Years on, Bhagtanwala awaits shifting of dump

Residents and office-bearers of the Sangarsh Committee are disappointed over the non-shifting of the dump despite assurances by political leaders of the state government. The garbage dump, which is in close vicinity of the Darbar Sahib, poses several health hazards for residents. Sanjay Sharma, activist of the Sangarsh Committee, said, “During the SAD-BJP regime, Congress leaders visited our dharna site and assured the shifting of the dump. Now, they have lame excuses that they are not getting land to shift dump.”Davinder Singh, a resident of Bhagtanwala, said, “We have been given assurances for long. Our children suffer from health issues.”Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation has failed to conduct the garbage processing work at Bhagtanwala dump.

Charanjit Singh Teja Amritsar, November 2 Bhagtanwala residents were promised by the Congress before the 2017 Assembly poll that the garbage dumpyard would be shifted from here, but the issue remains unresolved till date. Residents and office-bearers of the Sangarsh Committee are disappointed over the non-shifting of the dump despite assurances by political leaders of the state government. The garbage dump, which is in close vicinity of the Darbar Sahib, poses several health hazards for residents. Most of the residents complain that due to the continuous burning of garbage, the air quality gets worsened, giving rise to various chest-related problems. During the 2017 Assembly polls, Congress leaders, including Capt Amarinder Singh, Manpreet Singh Badal, Navjot Singh Sidhu, Gurjeet Singh Aujla and Inderbir Singh Bolaria had assured that the dump would be shifted within six months after the government formation. Sanjay Sharma, activist of the Sangarsh Committee, said, “During the SAD-BJP regime, Congress leaders visited our dharna site and assured the shifting of the dump. Capt Amarinder assured this in a public meeting at Bhadarkali Mandir. Now, they have lame excuses that they are not getting land to shift dump.” Davinder Singh, a resident of Bhagtanwala, said, “We have been given assurances for long. Still we have hope from the ruling Congress that the issue will be resolved as the party mentioned the same on its 2017 poll manifesto. Nothing has been done till date. Our children suffer from health issues.” Meanwhile, the Municipal Corporation has failed to conduct the garbage processing work at Bhagtanwala dump. The solid waste management company, hired by the MC, had arranged special machines to segregate refuse-derived fuel (RDF) from municipal solid waste for the purpose but in the absence of fuel and funds, the machines are lying defunct.
