Snatching incidents create panic among traders of Vallah market

Fruit and Vegetable Merchants Association president Tejinder Singh Kamboj said incidents of theft, mugging and looting were on the rise in the Vallah mandi. These incidents have spread panic among traders in the current season of potato and peas. Surinder Bindra, general secretary of the association, demanded setting up of a police chowki in the mandi and intensification of patrolling on the Maqboolpura-Mandi road in the morning. Arvinder Singh, president, Fruit Merchants Welfare Association, has demanded reconstruction of the broken boundary wall.

Neeraj Bagga Amritsar, November 11 Thefts and snatching incidents have gone up in and around the wholesale fruit and vegetable market at Vallah. Yesterday, Varinder Singh, an accountant of Chaudhary Kartar Singh and Sons, was robbed of Rs 86,000, while he was going to deposit the same in a bank. Three unknown youth riding the bike committed the crime after injuring him with a sharp-edged weapon. Fruit and Vegetable Merchants Association president Tejinder Singh Kamboj said incidents of theft, mugging and looting were on the rise in the Vallah mandi. Some unidentified persons had snatched away a bag of currency notes from a trader, Satish, some days ago. Onlookers successfully chased them and recovered the cash from their possession after a sound thrashing. Some people unsuccessfully tried to loot the shop of a trader Kashmir Singh on November 9. These incidents have spread panic among traders in the current season of potato and peas. So commission agents and buyers are to reach at Mandi in the wee hours between 3-4 am and remain there till late hours. Surinder Bindra, general secretary of the association, demanded setting up of a police chowki in the mandi and intensification of patrolling on the Maqboolpura-Mandi road in the morning. Arvinder Singh, president, Fruit Merchants Welfare Association, has demanded reconstruction of the broken boundary wall. He demanded installation of more street lights and CCTV cameras in the mandi area.
