GURU’S 550TH BIRTH ANNIVERSARY Thousands brave the cold for holy dip in Amrit Sarovar Neeraj Bagga Amritsar, November 12 A sea of devotees thronged the Golden Temple to pay their obeisance on the 550th birth celebrations of Guru Nanak Dev here today. Devotees made a beeline to offer prayers at gurdwaras, especially Harmandar Sahib, since wee hours. Unending flow of devotees was witnessed throughout the day and night. Despite cold weather in the morning, devotees took a holy dip in the Amrit Sarovar before offering their prayers. Devotees from across the country and abroad thronged the holy Sikh shrine in large numbers. Jalaun (show of splendour), displaying the centuries-old rare and precious artifacts, associated with the Sikh religion and kept in the Toshakhana of the Golden Temple, were put on display for the sangat at the sanctum sanctorum, Akal Takht and Gurdwara Baba Atal Rai in the Golden Temple complex. The SGPC has made elaborate arrangements to observe the Parkash Purb with fervour. The entire Golden Temple complex was illuminated with lights, candles and earthen lamps. Firework display at night added to the spectacle on the occasion. Meanwhile, ISCKON, Amritsar, held a three-hour long Shabad Kirtan to mark the 550th Gurpurb of the founder of Sikhism at Shri Shri Gaur Nitai Mandir. Earthen lamps were also lit up to celebrate the occasion and langar was distributed among devotees. The Chadha Motors Transport Charitable Trust Society organised a Nagar Kirtan to mark celebrate the Gurpurb. Floating light and sound show to regale people Amritsar: The state government has chalked out a three-day floating light and sound show, dedicated to the 550th Gurpurb celebrations at Beas from November 14. The show will be held on the banks of the Beas river on the GT road. Deputy Commissioner Shiv Dular Singh Dhillon said the show would be based on the philosophy of the founder of Sikhism. The floating light and sound show will be held twice a day. The first show will commence at 6:30 pm and will conclude at 7:45 pm. Another show will start at 7:50 pm and last till 9 pm.
