Charanjit Singh Teja Amritsar, November 12 City’s Centre-sponsored sanitation, development and beautification projects are in a limbo as the authorities have failed to implement these projects. The Central government has spent around Rs 1.30 crore under the National Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) on the revival of Chahar Bagh at the historical Ram Bagh without removing encroachments. The project has been delayed as the MC has failed to remove clubs from the garden. Even after submitting an agreement to the Punjab and Haryana High Court (HC) to shift the clubs and remove other encroachments immediately, the MC did not make any effort. Meanwhile, Mayor Karamjit Singh Rintu had extended his support to the clubs a few months back. Similarly, even after getting the tag of open-defecation free (ODF) city, most of the toilets built to achieve the target remain under lock. The MC had set up these toilet booths under Swachh Bharat Abhiyan in May, but the toilets are lying locked even after six months. In another such failure and violation of the Supreme Court guidelines, the MC has failed to implement the street vending project. Mayor Karamjit Singh had inaugurated the project with pomp and show near bus stand three months back. The resistance of a few vendors failed the MC’s move. The façade up gradation and beautification projects of outer ring road have the same story, where MC seems helpless to remove kiosks for the implementation of projects. Kulwant Singh, a local resident, said, “We have written to Union Minister Hardip Singh Puri to keep a check on the Central-sponsored projects. The funds are not being used for the betterment of the city. Even the projects of state government are in limbo.”
