City-based scholar Gambhir honoured

Tribune News ServiceAmritsar, November 12Eminent artiste and scholar Dr Baldev Gambhir was among the chosen few, who were honoured at a special ceremony held by Punjab Government to mark the 550th Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev. Dr Gambhir has been pursuing art for the past four decades and has received numerous state and national awards for his works. Elated at the honour, Dr Gambhir thanked the government for the award. Born in Pakistan in 1943, Dr Gambhir studied at Government Arts College, Lucknow, and later taught at BBK DAV College for Women in Amritsar. Anjother city-based awardee of the special honour is Er Jaswant Singh Gill, who is also known as the ‘coal mine hero’ from the fateful event in 1989.

Amritsar, November 12 Eminent artiste and scholar Dr Baldev Gambhir was among the chosen few, who were honoured at a special ceremony held by Punjab Government to mark the 550th Parkash Purb of Guru Nanak Dev. He received the honour from Chief Minister Capt Amarinder Singh. Dr Gambhir has been pursuing art for the past four decades and has received numerous state and national awards for his works. Elated at the honour, Dr Gambhir thanked the government for the award. “Art has been my life’s purpose and to get a special honour on the divine celebrations of the 550th Gurpurb of Guru Nanak Dev is humbling,” he said. Born in Pakistan in 1943, Dr Gambhir studied at Government Arts College, Lucknow, and later taught at BBK DAV College for Women in Amritsar. He has held over 500 and more exhibitions in his lifetime and is receipeint of Punjab Kala Academi Award as well. His stature in city is that of an institution in arts, with his works and technique in traditional oil and water colours considered in high regard. Rajesh Raina, secretary of KT KALA, a museum where Dr Gambhir’s works are displayed, shared his happiness over the honour conferred to him. Anjother city-based awardee of the special honour is Er Jaswant Singh Gill, who is also known as the ‘coal mine hero’ from the fateful event in 1989. Gill had saved 64 coal miners trapped in a mine at Raniganj in West Bengal, where he was serving as an engineer. He has also received the Sarvottam Jeevan Raksha Padak by the then President Ramaswamy Venkataraman in 1991 for the brave act.
