Weapon holders to lose licence for firing in open

The police have asked Station House Officers (SHOs) and gazetted officers to prepare a list of arms licence holders involved in firing incidents in the past and recommend cancellation of their licences. “It has been observed that people were resorting to firing even in cases of minor tussle, leading to law and order problem. He also asked licence holders to keep their weapons in safe custody and under lock and not to flash these as status symbol. He said all SHOs had been asked to check if licence holders were keeping their weapons safely and take action in case they failed to do so.

Amritsar, November 12 Concerned over repeated incidents of firing in the rural belt by the arms licence holders, the police have decided to tighten noose around them. The police have asked Station House Officers (SHOs) and gazetted officers to prepare a list of arms licence holders involved in firing incidents in the past and recommend cancellation of their licences. Amritsar (rural) SSP Vikram Jeet Duggal said the rural police had recommended cancellation of 74 arms licences of persons involved in 72 cases registered with the police since 2014. “It has been observed that people were resorting to firing even in cases of minor tussle, leading to law and order problem. Such incidents were happening frequenlty. So, we recommended for cancellation of arms licenses to the District Magistrate,” said Duggal. He also asked licence holders to keep their weapons in safe custody and under lock and not to flash these as status symbol. He said people should shun the habit of hanging arms in the open on the walls. “Due to this, people resort to firing even after a minor verbal dual,” he said. He said all SHOs had been asked to check if licence holders were keeping their weapons safely and take action in case they failed to do so.
