SSP Dhruv Dahiya said the smuggler had been identified as Rajandeep Singh, alias Ghuggi, of Jandiala Guru. He said the CIA team under the supervision of sub-inspector Paramjit Singh signalled a car to stop at a naka laid at Ekal Gadda village, 25 km from here. Rajandeep tried to escape but in vain. The SSP said the accused had brought the consignment from Jodhbir Singh Yodha of Devidaspur. The accused were associated with gangster Jaggu Bhagwanpuria, who is in jail. The duo has been booked under Sections 21, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act. The police have impounded the car. OC Crop residue mgmt reviewed Tarn Taran: A team of the Central Government on Saturday visited different villages in Tarn Taran to review the progress of crop residue management in paddy fields. The team, led by senior engineer Agriculture Department RK Rao met operators of custom machinery hiring centres and farmers, who have purchased the machinery on subsidy under the government scheme. Rao encouraged the operators of custom hiring centres to make the machines available to small and marginal farmers so that they could use these to shun stubble burning. He said the government was also giving a financial assistance of Rs 2,500 to small and marginal farmers to encourage them to shun the practice. Rao apprised the farmers of the loss to the soil health due to stubble burning. He also listed the benefits if the crop residue is left to decompose in the soil. OC Tarn Taran: In broad daylight, an employee of a finance company was robbed of Rs Rs 1.43 lakh at Bhoora Kohna village on Thursday. On a complaint of Desraj Singh, an employee of Bharat Finance Company Mallawala (Ferozpur), the Khemkaran police registered a case under Section 379 of the IPC on Friday. ASI Major Singh, who is the investigating officer, said the victim was on his way to Bhura Kohna village after collecting the amount from customers when the incident took place. The ASI said two motorcycle-born armed robbers stopped him on the way and snatched his bag containing Rs 1.43 lakh. OC
