Amritsar, April 26 Harpreet Singh, a Khalsa College student and a resident of Bathinda, committed suicide by hanging himself with the ceiling fan of his hostel room here this evening. Agitated over the incident, a large number of students of Khalsa College staged a dharna and blocked the main GT road leading to traffic chaos before the police diverted the traffic. Harpreet Singh was a student of BSc (agriculture) final year. He was detained from appearing in the examination by the college authorities, as his lectures were short of the mandatory 75 per cent in the semester. The incident came to light when his fellow students knocked at the door of his room. As they received no response, they broke open the door only to find him hanging from the ceiling fan. They immediately sounded the college authorities besides calling the police. Jagnandan Singh, a fellow student who accompanied him to the principal and the registrar of Khalsa College, said he was pleading with the authorities to issue him the roll number. He said Harpreet also submitted an application along with a medical certificate. He said his lectures fell short as he had suffered from chikungunya. Also, his father had an eye surgery due to which he could not attend the classes. However, he added that the authorities did not pay any heed to his pleas and he was forced to take the extreme step of ending his life. He added that Harpreet was a brilliant student and was a topper. He was also preparing for the ICAR exams. With the college authorities denying him the roll number, he became ineligible for appearing in the ICAR exams. The students raised slogans against the college authorities and demanded action against the principal, the registrar and the head of the department. They also demanded a probe into the incident. Dharmender Rataul, spokesperson of Khalsa College, said Harpreet Singh’s name was among the 160 students who were detained by the college authorities on account of shortage of lectures. He said he was not aware whether he had submitted any medical certificate. He said he would inquire about this. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police Gautam Singhal said they were waiting for the parents of the deceased to arrive. No suicide note was recovered from his hostel room yet. He said they were waiting for the family members of the deceased to take further action.
