Manmeet Singh Gill Amritsar, April 26 The primary health centre at Jandiala Guru is running without even a single doctor. The doctors posted here have been shifted to other centers after their promotion. At present, the centre is being run by staff nurses who have no option but to send the patients to the government health facility at Mannawala. The primary health centre at Jandiala is mostly visited by pregnant women. As the centre has no qualified doctor, pregnant women are forced to travel to Mannawala on the outskirts of the city. Area residents say the health centre is of no use without doctors. “The subsequent governments in the state have claimed to strengthen the medical services for the poor. The actual picture is what you see at the Jandiala Guru PHC,” said Baltej Singh, a resident of the area. He said doctors should be made available here at the earliest. People say the government’s attitude towards health services in rural areas is biased. “Earlier, all specialist doctors were taken back from the PHCs and the CHCs, and now even medical officers are not available. The focus of the department is more on urban areas. Rural people are in dire need of such facilities,” said Harman Singh, another resident. Meanwhile, Civil Surgeon, Dr Pardeep Chawla said doctors were shifted before the code of conduct for elections came into effect, and new transfers could not be made until the code was enforced. “We have sent a report to the Health Department and, hopefully, the appointments at the centre will be made soon,” he added.
