Charanjit Singh Teja Amritsar, June 18 Postmen in the city would be equipped with GPS devices for the timely delivery of parcels and mails. Following the Smart Postman project, 176 city postmen would be equipped with the smart Android phones and these will update information about the delivery of parcels and mails on a mobile application. With the help of the GPS-enabled mobile application, one can easily track letter or parcel on the department’s website. Senior officials at the General Post Office (GPO) said every postman would upload his digital signature after delivery of parcel and other items. The officials will get the information that the postman has done his job on time. The postal department would update the tracking and delivery details on its website. One can easily track parcel or mail through the official website of the department. According to information, with the adoption of this mobile application, the department can contest claims of missing letters and parcels often made by people. In the first phase, the department gave Android mobiles to 176 postmen in the city. “Now the postmen would start working more responsibly. They will deliver mails on time as now they are answerable through the application. The department would also gain the trust of the public with assured and timely delivery,” said an official at the GPO. With the emergence of new courier and postal private companies, the postal department was facing a tough competition. The private companies provide the tracking facility and updates about the delivery of parcels.
