Battle against drugs: Reformed addicts show the way forward

One reformed addict said, "An addict is a victim, who first thinks of ways to get money from sources to buy drugs. We are committed to cutting off the drug supply chain for saving our future generations." AMRITSAR: The real struggle for a drug addict begins after renouncing the substance abuse. "Many of the survivors, now helping others overcome addiction, claimed they found boys as young as seven-year-old were taking drugs. Later when he leaves it, he struggles to stay away from drugs and persons who might again lure him into addiction.

AMRITSAR: The real struggle for a drug addict begins after renouncing the substance abuse. This view was expressed by a reformed addict, on the occasion of International Day against Drug Abuse and Illicit Trafficking during a session on 'recognizing the widespread problem of drug addiction' organised by Amritsar police at DAV College for Women on Monday.Anti-drug activist, Dr Jaswinder Gandhi was among those present on the occasion. Addressing the gathering, he said, "If there is an addict in the family, other members should help him with proper counselling and not resort to shaming him."Some ex-addicts also shared their journey and experience of giving up drugs. One reformed addict said, "An addict is a victim, who first thinks of ways to get money from sources to buy drugs. Later when he leaves it, he struggles to stay away from drugs and persons who might again lure him into addiction."Many of the survivors, now helping others overcome addiction, claimed they found boys as young as seven-year-old were taking drugs. They said they could relate to every patient undergoing a de-addiction programme Amritsar commissioner of police S S Shrivastava said, "The city is vulnerable due to proximity to the international border , resulting in easy supply of drugs. With joint efforts of police and the society, drug menace can be controlled. We are committed to cutting off the drug supply chain for saving our future generations."
