ASI, head constable found consuming drugs, arrested

The two cops were identified as Assistant Sub-Inspector Tarlochan Singh and head constable Gurwinder Singh, both posted with the traffic wing of the Amritsar rural police. The case was registered following the orders of SP (quarters), Amritsar rural police. They were found by a Nihang Sikh youth while consuming heroin reportedly near a gurdwara. Earlier, they tried to convince the Nihang youth that they were cops and were taking rest. Later, the two cops admitted that they had become victims of drug abuse and were consuming drugs at that time when the youth made the video.

Amritsar, July 17 If the arrest of Inspector Inderjit Singh for his alleged connections with drug smugglers brought embarrassment to the Police Department, two cops posted with the Amritsar rural police have been arrested for drug consumption. They were found by a Nihang Sikh youth while consuming heroin reportedly near a gurdwara. A video uploaded on social networking website immediately went viral. A day after this, an FIR was registered against them. They were charged under Sections 27, 61 and 85 of the NDPS Act besides Section 201 of the IPC. Police officials said a report had been sent to higher authorities and further process to place them under suspension had been initiated. A video went viral on social media yesterday in which a Nihang youth caught two cops allegedly consuming smack in a red-coloured Maruti car, parked under a tree reportedly near a shrine. The Nihang youth was seen objecting to their action and when he asked the two cops to show their turban or the socks etc beneath their trousers, the accused cops sped away from the spot. Earlier, they tried to convince the Nihang youth that they were cops and were taking rest. The case was registered following the orders of SP (quarters), Amritsar rural police. He asked the police to get their medical examination and dope test conducted at Swami Vivekanand De-addiction Centre at Government Medical College here. Their blood samples would also be sent for a chemical examination. The reports received from Swami Vivekanand De-addiction Centre confirmed the traces of morphine. Later, the two cops admitted that they had become victims of drug abuse and were consuming drugs at that time when the youth made the video. SSP Parampal Singh said such a gross violation of law was unacceptable. The police were supposed to nail drug smugglers and such black sheep brought bad repute to the disciplined force. He said the process had been initiated to place them under suspension and reports had been sent to higher authorities. “We will also investigate how and when they started consuming drugs,” he added.
