Though the traffic police have tow-away vehicles, the number of such vehicles is inadequate to deal with the issue. Moreover, the focus of the traffic cops and contractors of the towing vehicles appears to be making profit rather than solving the mess and regulating the traffic. At present, the traffic police have only six recovery vans and none of them is capable of lifting heavy vehicles, such as SUVs, said an official, who didn’t wish to be named. He said the traffic police required more than 12 recovery vans capable of lifting heavy vehicles. Recently, someone parked his Innova car in the middle of the Lawrence road near a branch of Punjab National Bank. Though the tow away vehicle was called, it failed to do the job. Finally, the tow-away team had to return empty handed. Ironically, there was no traffic cop to stay at the spot and issue challan to the offender. The vehicle remained there for around one hour and the commuters were seen struggling amid traffic jam. Haphazard parking at Nehru Shopping Complex is a common sight. It becomes a Herculean task for people to take their vehicles out of the parking lot. The story is same in almost all parts of the city. The problem is worse in the walled city, Putlighar, Lawrence road chowk, court road and Crystal chowk. Additional Deputy Commissioner of Police, Traffic, Harjit Singh Dhaliwal could not be contacted despite repeated attempts.
