Amritsar, September 21 Tourists visiting the Golden Temple are disappointed as they have to return without seeing the multilingual high-tech multimedia interpretation centre for the past six days. The employees of the centre are on strike as they haven’t received salaries for the past two months. The center runs from the underground Golden Temple entrance plaza. The delay in the release of salaries of the employees of the state government-run multimedia interpretation centre and the Heritage Street has affected the services. A pilgrim from Ludhiana, Jasdeep Singh, who was in the city on Wednesday along with his family, said after paying obeisance at Golden Temple, he reached the interpretation centre, but was disappointed to find it locked. Employees have already stopped cleaning of the Heritage Street and announced to switch off street lights in protest. The then Deputy Chief Minister Sukhbir Singh Badal had inaugurated the Rs 160-crore Heritage Street project on October 25 last year. Owing to paucity of funds, the administration is now facing a tough time to manage the Heritage Street. The interpretation centre was set up with an investment of Rs 50 crore. The centre educates the visitors about the Sikh religion and its humanitarian philosophy through latest technological means, such as laser images and 3-dimensional techniques. It has four galleries equipped with interpretation appliances. An agitating employee, Jugraj Singh, said the administration required Rs 45 lakh per month to run both projects. Out of it, about Rs 15 lakh goes to foot electricity bills. Punjab State Power Corporation Limited (PSPCL) is also all set to take action over non-payment of bills. The government had handed over the maintainance of the centre and the area around to a private company, which has 130 employees. When contacted, Interpretation Centre manager Tajinder Singh said, “I have met senior officials and apprised them of the situation. We hope their salaries will be released soon.”
