‘Congress leaders managed to change the areas on the map as per their will’ Amritsar, November 22 Though the state government has announced that elections to civics bodies will be conducted in December, but political parties are not satisfied with the fresh demarcation of wards and want redress of their objections on priority. Local leaders of the BJP, the SAD and the AAP alleged that the Local Bodies Department did not address the objections in a hurry to conduct the elections. Moreover, politicians of opposition parties alleged that Congress leaders managed to change the areas on the map as per their will. The local unit of the BJP opposed the delimitation of the wards and alleged that several errors and inaccuracies were left in the final draft of the delimitation. The BJP leaders alleged that the Local Bodies Department had assured the parties during the delimitation process that the wards would be constituted on the basis of number of voters. As per the plan, the average number of voters was fixed 10,000 in each ward. But when the final draft was released, ward no. 36 had 23,798 voters while ward no. 85 had only 2,029 voters. Rajesh Honey, district president, BJP, alleged that the Congress converted several wards from SC to General and General to SC to derive political benefits. Earlier, some of the areas were reserved for women but now they were reserved for men. There are several errors in the final list. The BJP will not allow such wrongdoing”, he added. Surinder Singh, a senior leader of the AAP, said, “Most of the aspirants for “councillor seat” have failed to understand the new map of demarcation. The new map is quite complex, as the Congress has shuffled the area to get benefits. We have submitted our objections, but the local bodies did not address these. Some wards have only 5,000 votes and some have more than 20,000. I don’t know why they are in a hurry to conduct elections”. The Congress leaders refuted the allegations of opposition parties.
