Toll reaches 5 as 2 more die in lightning; crops suffer damage across Marathwada

It includes orchid farms spread over 261 hectare, followed by hot weather season crops cultivated on 214 hectare and irrigated farms on 89 hectare. It has suffered loss to irrigated farms spread over 445 hectare and orchid farms on 76 hectare. Isolated incidents of hailstorm were also reported from the parts of Marathwada.As per preliminary survey carried out by the district level authorities, Latur district has reported maximum damage to agricultural sector on nearly 563.25 hectare. As per official data, three persons had lost their lives while another 20 sustained injured due to hailstorm and lightening related incidents in the region.

Aurangabad: Two more people have died in incidents of lightening in Marathwada over past 24-hours, taking the death toll due unseasonal weather conditions to five.As per preliminary analysis carried by the government agencies, nearly 946 hectare of agricultural land and orchid farms from Nanded, Latur and Osmanabad districts of Marathwada region have suffered severe damage (more than 33%) due to unseasonal showers that were accompanied by gusty winds, since the begining of April.As per divisional authorities, one Rajendra Raut (43) from Devinimgaon village in Ashti taluka of Beed district died after lightening struck him on Tuesday. In a similar mishap, 40-year old Kumar Pawar from Jaymala Tanda I Udgir taluka of Latur district also lost his life.Earlier on Monday, three people had died in Parbhani , Latur and Nanded districts after being struck with lightening. Isolated incidents of hailstorm were also reported from the parts of Marathwada.As per preliminary survey carried out by the district level authorities, Latur district has reported maximum damage to agricultural sector on nearly 563.25 hectare. Osmanabad district reported loss to irrigated agricultural land on 82 hectare, while similar damage to orchids on 35 hectare, official records show.According to the met department, the city and many parts of the region could witness overcaste conditions for next 24-hours. The city, which received a brief spell of showers on Tuesday evening, did not report any rainfall activity for next 48-hours.Notably, the incidents of hailstorm and unseasonal showers accompanied by lightning and heavy winds had created havoc in different parts of Marathwada for almost 72-hours. As per official data, three persons had lost their lives while another 20 sustained injured due to hailstorm and lightening related incidents in the region. The natural calamity had devastating effect on agricultural sector.
