The burning of tonnes of wastes across the city continues unabated, despite state help provided to implement the waste management project.One of the biggest issues that plagued the city after the Naregaon logjam in February was the formation of dumping points across the city and subsequent burning. Solid waste management experts credit this mess to failure in collecting segregated waste.Environmental activist Kishor Pathak, the burning of waste is rampant at different spots in Cidco, Hudco and Old City even four months after the crisis started. The green cover in Aurangabad is less than 4% and there is no balance giving way to allergies, aggravation of asthama and silicosis, Pathak said, adding that waste management is not only the responsibility of the AMC but also of citizens.On May 1, the AMC undertook a Mahaswachhata Abhiyaan. Mayor Nandkumar Ghodele claimed to lift 250 tonne from dumping spots in the city during the campaign. A similar campaign is slated to be held on May 26 and 27. Entrepreneur Bhagatsing Darak said, “After the waste is lifted, we appeal to people to join the drive of beautifying the dumping points and garbage vulnerable points.” —Arpita Sharad
