‘Smart’gear: Aurangabad likely to get good public transport system by year-end

A total of 150 buses were expected to be procured and made operational in phases over the next two years as part of the Aurangabad Smart City project.Rathod said the terms and conditions listed in the proposal were not satisfactory and subsequently there was no response to it.Currently, the city’s public transport system is being run by the Maharashtra State Road Transport Corporation with 25-30 buses on 11 routes.The municipal area spreads over 170 sq km and as per the 2011 census, the city has a population of 11.75 lakh.

Aurangabad: The city’s public transport is expected to get the much-needed boost with the procurement of 100 buses and the hiring of agencies to run them by December.“Agencies will be appointed to run and maintain the buses and another for ticket collection,” Pramod Rathod, a member of the board of directors of Aurangabad Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (ASCDCL), told TOI on Thursday.The ASCDCL is a Special Purpose Vehicle (SPV) created under the Aurangabad Smart City project.Considering the need for a robust public transport system in the city, the AMC had last week invited interested parties for the purchase of 100 midibuses.Consequently, representatives from Tata, Mahindra, Eicher and Ashok Leyland met with the AMC officials on Wednesday and showed interest in providing the buses.“There is still a lot to be finalised in terms of land provision for parking, setting up and operation of maintenance and service depot.
