Pune among seven Maha districts with rainfall deficit

  • | Thursday | 21st June, 2018

Pune: Seven districts in Maharashtra are currently in the “rain deficient” category, with Pune making it to the list on Wednesday. Most of the districts currently in the excess rainfall category are there primarily because they had received good rains till June 12. Pune district has received just 66.4mm of rain till now — against a normal rainfall figure of 83.6mm — and is 21% rainfall deficient. The officials at the India Meteorological Department (IMD) blame the weak monsoon pattern. The worst-affected district is Nashik, which has reported a 62% deficiency in rainfall in the June 1-June 20 time period. “The cyclonic circulation may activate the monsoon current and cause enhanced rainfall activity in peninsular India, including Maharashtra, around June 23-24,” he said. There are currently 18 districts in the state that have recorded excess rainfall.

A cyclonic circulation over the Bay of Bengal may, however, deepen and reactivate the monsoon.AK Srivastava, the head of IMD’s Climate Monitoring and Analysis Group, told TOI that till the monsoon was active, roughly till June 12, Maharashtra had just four districts with rainfall deficiency. “Now, the number has gone up to seven. Most of the districts currently in the excess rainfall category are there primarily because they had received good rains till June 12. However, the Konkan region is an exception. Even in the past few days, it has received copious amounts of rain. Several districts in the Konkan region are currently reporting ‘excess’ to ‘large excess’ rainfall,” he said.Srivastava said a cyclonic circulation over central Bay of Bengal and neighbourhood is expected to deepen within the next 48 hours. “The cyclonic circulation may activate the monsoon current and cause enhanced rainfall activity in peninsular India, including Maharashtra, around June 23-24,” he said. There are currently 18 districts in the state that have recorded excess rainfall. Till June 19, Pune district was in the “normal” rainfall category, but it had to be put on the “deficient” list on June 20 due to the scanty rainfall over the last few days. Other deficient districts include Nasik and Nandurbar in Madhya Maharashtra, Aurangabad and Jalna in Marathwada, Buldhana in Vidarbha and Palghar in Konkan.Over the last 10 days, a weak monsoon pattern has been observed over India due to the weakening of the monsoon winds, said another official.
