Despite that, the nullahs continue to be as dirty as they were. “As soon as we undertake cleaning, people dump the waste again which leads to blockage. Besides that, after the closure of Naregaon dump yard, we have nowhere to dump the waste lifted from nullahs, as a result we have to put it alongside the drain,” he said. Aurangabad: Despite spending crores of rupees on cleaning of nullahs across the city, the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has failed in the job as the city nullahs continue to be blocked by waste, construction debris and silt. After the previous years’ allegations of improper nullah cleaning, the AMC had decided to engage its own workers to undertake the work instead of giving the contract to other agencies. This year, the civic body had hired machinery from private agencies and deployed its own staff to undertake routine nullahs cleaning. The officials say that consistent waste dumping by citizens with no place for processing it is making the work difficult.City engineer Sakharam Panzade had said that the AMC would ensure that the cleaning is done through out the monsoon season. “One time cleaning does not suffice as the water is in a constant flow during monsoon. Though the city has 67-km long network of nullah, we have selected garbage vulnerable points to undertake cleaning work,” he had said. However, this year the situation has been no different than previous years. The AMC hired machinery from private agencies by spending Rs 1.75 crore and engaged its workers. The work which was supposed to be done before the rains started a week after the arrival of monsoon. Despite that, the nullahs continue to be as dirty as they were. The residents, shop owners and passersby continue to face hardships because of the dirt and stagnant water. When contacted, city engineer Panzade said that there are two main challenges before the civic body. “As soon as we undertake cleaning, people dump the waste again which leads to blockage. making our work look incomplete even after several rounds. Besides that, after the closure of Naregaon dump yard, we have nowhere to dump the waste lifted from nullahs, as a result we have to put it alongside the drain,” he said.
