Youths on green mission plant 9,000 saplings in city

The group plants trees, engages in sustenance activities and helps others in planning their plantation drives in coordination with the municipal corporation.As part of a hill trek, 29-year-old student and businessman Ravi Chaudhary, a former NCC cadet, along with 6-7 people, had planted 35 saplings at Goga Baba Tekdi in the city to join the trend of tree plantation in 2012. Only 2 out of 35 trees survived. That is when Chaudhary and his group felt the need of sustainable efforts to grow trees. The team got into research and hard work to plant trees and to engage in watering efforts. Over the next 4 years, the group under the name Prayas Youth Foundation planted around 9,000 trees with a whopping 80% survival rate.Prayas Youth Foundation has 50 active volunteers, besides 300-400 who have contributed at some point. For 2018-19, its core team includes Anurang Dorle, Prashant Balankhe, Shivani Deshpande, Ketki Kulkarni, Pritesh Gawas, Pushpak Hurpade, Akash Dhage and Gaurav Paprival.Every Sunday, the group spends 2-3 hours to care for the trees planted earlier or to plant new saplings. It has so far planted 2,150 trees at Gogababa hill base out of which 1,250 have sustained. The other spaces include Kargil Smriti Van, WRD Department Gajanan Mandir Area, Kala Housing Society, Bhausingpura, Amrut Sai Plaza, Railway Station, Divisional Sports Complex, MIT College, Department of Commerce at Babasaheb Ambedkar Marathwada University and dividers at various city roads.
