Hike wages, end unfair practices: Porters

Aurangabad: The Maharashtra Rajya Hamaal Mapadi Mahamandal on Friday held a demonstration pressing for a rise in the wages, under the Maharashtra Mathadi, Hamal and other Manual Workers (Regulation of Employment and Welfare) Act, 1969 (Mathadi Act). The workers also protested against what they called unfair practices followed by employers.Subhash Lomte, general secretary of the body, said the district Mathadi Board must use its authority to reinstate sacked workers. It should also ensure that employers pay what is due to workers.In a memorandum to the chief minister submitted at the local labour office, the state-level body of porters listed its various demands.This is the third time in the past six months that these workers have protested, seeking reinstatement of workers earlier sacked in violation of the law. The memorandum said workers who are registered are thrown out of work, and replaced with people who are not registered.The government decision on hike in wages of porters has not been implemented, the memorandum states. Among the employers defaulting on the directions of the state government is the central government.Lomte said wages of workers are reduced, leading to financial losses. No arrears are paid when wages are pending, he said.Porters on protest said several years after the previous work agreement expired, there is no renewal of the agreement. This causes a huge loss in the welfare protections of workers. And there are also different wages offered for the same job, protesters said.
