The stir was called off after the mayor gave them an assurance to visit the area on Saturday.Incidentally, the residents had staged a major agitation in 2014 when they started getting contaiminated water due to the soiled drinking water pipelines. The residents had reiterated their demands in April this year and threatened self-immolation to attract the attention of the civic body. Subsequently, the AMC officials had assured to act within a month and address their demands.Chandrakant Rupekar, the former city president of Republican Sena, said no action has been taken for the last three months for their issues concerning drinking water supply, drainage line and roads.“Our drinking water pipeline is old and has developed leakages due to which the drain water mixes with the drinking water. The pipeline is of cement and needs to be replaced with iron cast pipeline,” Rupekar said. The agitators also said that due to the waste and silt gathering in the open drain, the area is stinks. “The monsoon rain further aggravates the problems, leading to people falling sick in the locality,” they complained. The residents of Lion’s Club Colony, street no 6, 7 and 8 said that the roads in the area have not been repaired for over 15 years. “While the AMC did not take any efforts to build new roads in the area, it added to our woes by digging up the existing roads to lay new underground drainage line. However, we had told the civic body, that we do not require new drainage line but we need water pipeline replaced,” Rupekar said.Responding to the agitation, mayor Nandkumar Ghodele told TOI that this time the AMC will take serious cognizance of the problems of the residents. I will visit the locality on Saturday along with the officials of the concerned departments. Cleaning of drains will be undertaken immediately while the tenders for water pipeline and roads will be prepared after the visit,” Ghodele said.
