Aurangabad: The Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) has directed water works engineers to initiate water supply with a two-day gap from Saturday.The move followed an uproar over delayed and unequal supply to different areas of the city.However, the duration of water supply will be restricted to merely 10 minutes.Statements from the mayor and deputy engineer suggest that there is a massive confusion over the decision even among authorities.The AMC reduced the frequency of water supply to a majority of the city wards during summer, citing increased demand and low pressure in water supply.Consequently, the frequency of supply was reduced. The water supply duration in Cidco N-3, N-4, N-5, N-6, N-7, N-8, Jay Bhawani Nagar, Sangarsh Nagar, Mukundwadi, Chikalthana Hudco N-9, N-11, N-12 is currently 45 minutes.The 18 wards of the old city getting water supplied from Shahgunj water tank are meanwhile getting water once in seven days. Clearly, the supply does not suffice for a family of four. Families have to ration water very strictly, even as they seek other supply options.Asked whether water supply after the two-day gap will be implemented in all wards, AMC water works executive engineer Hemant Kolhe said it is not possible for AMC to do so. Everyone will have to do a little “adjustment,” Kolhe said.However, activist Rahul Ingle, who compared the amount of water supplied currently versus the water to be supplied as per the new system, said AMC is defrauding citizens. No thought went into the plan. “If one calculated the number of hours of water supplied, residents will receive less water under the new plan as the first 5-10 minutes get wasted with only air or impure water coming through the tap,” Ingle said.Moreover, mayor said that all wards will be included in the system but the deputy engineer of the water works department Sartaj Singh Chahal said the system will be implemented phasewise, starting with the mayor’s ward; it would later extend to the ward of the leader of the house, then the ward of the chairman of the standing committee.“We will see how the system works and then make changes accordingly,” Chahal said. However, the wards that Chahal mentioned already get sufficient water supply.
