‘Back-breaking’ potholes forcing commuters to seek medical help

Upon consulting a doctor, she was diagnosed with orthopaedic issues. “I ignored the pain as a temporary condition, but it kept on escalating. When I saw the doctor, I was found to have lower back disorder. I am now taking physiotherapy treatment for the condition,” she said.Experts say that complains of lower and cervical backache increase significantly during rainy season. Motorists failing to gauge the depth end up getting unpleasant jerks, at times, resulting in serious conditions.The rain has left several areas on the city including MGM, Azad Chowk, Champa Chowk, Aurangapura, Savarkar Chowk, Baba Petrol Pump, Adalat Road and Old Mondha and the smaller lanes in residential areas near Railway Station, Mukundwadi and Chikalthana MIDC with many big and small potholes causing inconvenience to commuters.Orthopaedic specialist Anil Dhule says, “The old age patients are prone to develop spinal fracture due to deep potholes. The patients develop a fracture in the spine due to the sudden jerk caused while travelling over a deep pothole. Such patients may neglect the pain as a regular backache and the condition is only diagnosed when they consult doctor.”Physiotherapist Suchirai Gaikwad says that the cases of prolapsed inter-vertebral disc or PIVD increases in the rainy season by 2 to 3 times due to potholes. “Many cases of lower back pain and cervical pain are registered in this season. When motorists, especially those traveling on two-wheelers travel on uneven roads for prolonged period of time, they might develop herniated disc is a displacement of disc material,” Gaikwad said.Dhule said that in most of these cases, the patient is suggested bed rest or physiotherapy as the operative procedures are not suitable.
