Veg market remains filthy despite stir by citizens

After they failed to live up to assurances, residents locked the AMC gate on July 7. City engineer Sakharam Panzade and solid waste management cell incharge Nandkishore Bhombe again assured to address their concerns in two days. The residents say the waste heap is still lying there.

The site was meant only for organic waste but turned into a dumping ground for all sorts of waste. When asked about accountability, the AMC’s sanitation staff said they had no place to dispose the waste, leaving residents in the area exposed to all sorts of health risks associated with waste dumping.Subsequently, the residents, led by the Maharashtra Navnirman Sena, held a rasta roko in the area on July 3 and called it off after AMC officials assured to lift waste from the area. After they failed to live up to assurances, residents locked the AMC gate on July 7. City engineer Sakharam Panzade and solid waste management cell incharge Nandkishore Bhombe again assured to address their concerns in two days. The residents say the waste heap is still lying there. Two-three trucks of waste were lifted on Tuesday but there is still a lot left.Activist Nutan Jaiswal said that children and the elderly are witnessing fever, loose motions and subsequent visits to the doctor. The waste has mixed with rainwater and it has become difficult to commute. This is the heart of the city and all residents pay their taxes regularly. The MP and MLAs are conning the people and this kind of mismanagement calls for the suspension of this municipal corporation, Jaiswal said.Apart from waste crisis, the residents of the area are dealing with poor roads, water supply issues and dirty nullahs.
