AMC initiates nullah widening work on N-6 Cidco at Mata Mandir Chowk

Aurangabad: Civic body has taken up the work of widening nullahs in the low lying area of N-6 Cidco at Mata Mandir Chowk. Kulkarni said that the proposal for the work was pending before the AMC for the last one and half years.MLA Atul Save had lambasted AMC executive engineer Afsar Siddiqui for not undertaking the nullah widening work, even after being pursued by public representatives. The incident had caused an uproar in the area, as residents blamed the civic body of inaction.All the rainwater from N-5 and other higher areas of N-6 Cidco flow into this open drain. The overflowing drain there has led to two deaths in the last two years.As part of the plan, AMC is widening the mouth of the nullah by 4 feet in width and 4.5 feet in depth. Subsequently, during heavy rains, the drain overflows and roads are flooded, making it difficult for pedestrians and motorists to pass through.

The contractor said that the new construction will be carried out over a distance of 75 feet, from the N-8 Botanical Garden to the Shivdutt Housing Society.The work is expected to give an outlet to rain water into a bigger nullah, thereby putting an end to waterlogging woes.Around 16 months ago, a youth had died after slipping into an open storm water nullah in N-6 Cidco. His body was fished out from Azad Chowk.After a heavy spell on June 21 this year, 38-year-old engineer Chetan Chopade was found dead in the same nulllah. The incident had caused an uproar in the area, as residents blamed the civic body of inaction.All the rainwater from N-5 and other higher areas of N-6 Cidco flow into this open drain. Subsequently, during heavy rains, the drain overflows and roads are flooded, making it difficult for pedestrians and motorists to pass through. The threat of slipping and falling into the drain looms large.Local residents said that on June 21, the road through which Chopade was travelling had knee-deep water.Corporators Makarand Kulkarni and Shivaji Dandge said that the solution to the problem lay in widening the mouth of the nullah at Mata Mandir Chowk. Kulkarni said that the proposal for the work was pending before the AMC for the last one and half years.MLA Atul Save had lambasted AMC executive engineer Afsar Siddiqui for not undertaking the nullah widening work, even after being pursued by public representatives. Last week, work was finally initiated.
