Aurangabad: The state pollution board has started a probe after receiving complaints from farmers in Pathri village of Phulambri tehsil that a local liquor industry was dumping chemicals that has led to alleged contamination of borewells and well water over an area of 240 acres.The farmers, in a letter to the district collector, have demanded that they should be rehabilitated and compensated for the crop loss due to the contamination.Maharashtra Pollution Control Board (MPCB) sub regional officer Jayant Kadam said an investigation has been initiated into the matter. An MPCB squad visited the affected area on Friday and took samples of water from the affected well.Pramod Jadhav, who has seven acres in Pathri, a liquor industry started dumping distillery effluent during summer. However, as the rainy season began, the chemical waste dumped in the open plot percolated into the ground and spread into the wells, borewells and farms. This has led to mixing of acidic substance into the source of drinking and farming water,” he said.Another farmer, Ganesh Jadhav, whose family owns a 6 acre, got suspicious after the well water turned yellowish and smelled different. “We took the water samples from the nearby wells and got it tested from a private laboratory. The report stated that the water was unfit for consumption of human, animals and for farming,” he said.In their letter to the district collector, the farmers demanded that a panchnama be done to ascertain the losses and the effects of the alleged chemical dumping.
