Big stones meant for potholes hit traffic

AURANGABAD: The civic administration has unloaded heaps of stones having a diametre of one foot to fill the potholes at Jafar Gate in Old Mondha , deterring the movement of traffic for the last three to four days.Citizens have been contemplating how Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) plans to level the road using the stones.The condition of roads have always been abominable in the busy market area of Old Mondha. The municipal corporation decided to undertake repair works in the market places considering the heavy traffic and the gaping potholes pockmarking the area.The narrow roads have shrunk further after AMC's road repair contractor unloaded heaps of stones at regular intervals of the road last week. The stones have not only led to traffic snarls, it is also incoveniencing businesses and residents in equal measure.On Monday, the contractor engaged manual labourers to break the stones into smaller (4 to 6 inches long) pieces. These pieces, mixed with loose soil were put over the potholes and a roller was was run over it.Soon after the work was complete, the stone pieces started coming off due to the movement of vehicles and the loose soil filled the atmosphere with dust, aggravating the situtaion than what it was before.When asked about the reason behind unloading the stones, additional municipal commissioner D P Kulkarni said, "When the size of the potholes is big, they need to be filled with bigger stones. Vehicles tend to lose balance if fine granular-sub-base (GSB) is used for levelling the road." When informed about the stones that were coming off, Kulkarni said he would look into the matter.
