Aurangabad police asked to keep watch on illicit biz, erring cops

AURANGABAD: The special branch (SB) of the city police has been tasked with keeping an eye on illicit businesses as well as the policemen who shield culprits. The anti-terrorism cell too acts under the special branch here.When contacted, special branch senior inspector Sheshrao Udar confirmed the move but refused to elaborate, saying that it was purely an internal matter. The special branch acts as an independent intelligence gathering wing and is exempted from wearing uniform during duty hours and it is considered a side posting. This is for the first time that the SB would be seen in action against criminals and miscreants. City police chief Chiranjeev Prasad has also asked the SB to keep a watch on businesses and liquor establishments operating beyond permitted time limits.The police chief said the aim was to add more hands to the existing ones in curbing crime.Traditionally, besides the local police station and its detection branch, it is the crime branch that is responsible for keeping an overall check on criminals and crimes, and solving undetected cases. The special branch acts as an independent intelligence gathering wing and is exempted from wearing uniform during duty hours and it is considered a side posting. This is for the first time that the SB would be seen in action against criminals and miscreants. Deputy commissioner of police (headquarters) Deepali Dhate Ghadge said, "We have given a free hand to the SB, asking them to go after the illicit businesses. The move should not be seen as an attempt to demean the crime branch, she added.The message that one more branch directly operating to keep a check on illegal activities is set to bring down illegal activities, said an officer with the special branch.Considering the political, administrative, industrial and tourism prominence the city has, Aurangabad 's SB is headed by an assistant commissioner rank officer, who is assisted by an inspector, assistant inspector, three sub-inspectors and a constabulary comprising over 80 men.These men are allotted beats such as Congress, BJP, NCP, Muslims, Hindus, Industries, government offices, to name a few. The sleuths are supposed to collect information about the activities from their beats and prepare reports.
