Everyone including the media, doctors, government, the society along with family, friends and, well-wishers need to work together to prevent suicides.“The three broad causes of committing suicide lie in biological, psychological and social factors. The reduction in neurochemicals like serotonin, which is responsible for decision making, attention, and concentration leads to depression. Psychologically, improper coping mechanism, stress-bearing capability, underdeveloped soft skills like decision making, communication and planning and social issues like financial condition, loss of job, marital and family troubles drive people to depression,” consultant psychiatrist Amol Deshmukh said.“Many times, when we see a close person going through stress and depression, we disconnect ourselves from his or her pain or we are too busy in our own life and don't have time to spend with a person who needs it the most. When a person known to you is showing warning signs, it is important to let them know that their pain and their life matters. They should feel like they have someone to listen to,” consultant psychiatrist Monali Deshpande said.Signs like insomnia, fatigue, sense of hopelessness, talks of ending life, loss of confidence, disturbed diet patterns and anxiety should not be ignored. “When the person opens up to you about the problem, they should be told that the phase of life is treatable and will pass. They should not be left alone and different medications and psychotherapies must be made available to them to help their condition,” Deshmukh added.Experts also highlighted the need for building more helplines and raising awareness about suicide prevention as 80 per cent of suicide cases are preventable.
