The chief minister and his team can also review government schemes and initiatives.”However he added that such measures should not become merely a populist ritual.Sharad Advant of advocacy group Marathwada Janta Vikas Parishad said it was unfortunate that the state cabinet meeting could not take place at Aurangabad last year.Advant said, “Such high-level meeting ensures that the government machinery is mobilised from top to bottom. Instead, the chief minister convened a meeting in Mumbai last year, to review the status and progress of decisions taken at the 2016 meeting.Some of the announcements made during the last cabinet meet, but which are still on paper are— development of airport at Aurangabad and Nanded, inclusion of Aurangabad under the Heritage City Development and Augmentation Yojana (HRIDAY) and UNESCO’s World Heritage City Programme, along with upgradation of government polytechnics at Jalna and Latur to the status of engineering college.Some announcements are yet to matrialise such as— setting up seed park at Jalna, textile park at Parbhani, Beed and Nanded districts, formation of linguistic centre and construction of administrative building in Aurangabad.Some of the positive outcomes of the last cabinet meeting are— the start of National Law University and Irrigation Commissionerate at Aurangabad, setting up family courts at Beed, Jalna, Osmanabad and Parbhani and expenditure worth Rs 353 crore to increase irrigation capacity of Lower Dudhana project from 39,000 hectare to 50,032 hectare.Senior economist S M Desarda said the special cabinet meet must take place at Aurangabad as parts of Marathwada is facing an agrarian crisis due to poor monsoon.He said, “The special cabinet meet could ensure effective relief measures, besides taking stock of rain-related crisis.
