NGO pushes for special PM-monitored vehicle for Marathwada development

Aurangabad: In a presentation to Prime Minister Narendra Modi, advocacy group Marathwada Janta Vikas Parishad stressed the need for a Backward Areas Development Authority under the prime minister’s chairmanship to propel Marathwada to progress.The Authority is expected to give special attention to backward regions in the country like Marathwada and will ensure that backward districts get their due in schemes of the Central government.“Marathawada was one of the most backward regions of Maharashtra and after 69 years of independence, it is unfortunate that seven of its eight districts are still identified and recognized as most backward districts and feature in a list of the country’s 104 most backward districts put out by the Centre on the basis of a survey,” Pradeep Deshmukh, advocate and president of the Marathwada Janta Vikas Parishad said.Referring to the Marathwada Development Board, a regional statutory board formed under Article 371(2) of the Constitution of India in the year 1995, he said such measures had failed as funds meant for Marathwada were diverted to developed Western Maharashtra, which had greater political strength.The development of a backward region cannot be the sole responsibility of the state government, Deshmukh said, adding that chief minister Devendra Fadnavis had taken some positive steps.
