As addict pours whitener on a handkerchief and uses it as an inhaler, which gives him a high for four to 10 hours.The city police have decided to shoot notices to stationary shops selling whiteners within the city limits. In addition to this, a special squad headed by sub-inspector Reshma Saudagar has been tasked with initiating action against shops selling the whitener to minors.A decision in this regard was taken on Wednesday when a woman and her two kids aged 12 and seven reached the city police commissionerate. She complained that her kids were addicted to the whitener.Police commissioner Chiranjeev Prasad has termed the addiction as menace. “The number of adolescents falling prey to the trap of whitener-inhaling addiction appears to be alarming. It is high-time that the police and the society come together to deal with the menace,” he told TOI.DCP (headquarter) Deepali Dhate-Ghadge said they had formed a special squad to deal with the issue. “We have taken serious cognizance of the rampant sale of whitener to adolescents, teenagers and even youths. There are serious health, physical as well as mental health repercussions to the addicts of such solvents, said the psychiatrist.
