Govt cancer hospital serves more than 2L patients in 6 yrs

Aurangabad: The Government Cancer Hospital will complete six years on Friday. The hospital has served more than 2.12 lakh outpatients and has been a boon for affordable healthcare in Maharashtra.The Government Cancer Hospital was inaugurated on 21 September 2012. The 165-bedd hospital received the status of State Cancer Institute (SCI) on September 15, 2016.Speaking about the development of the hospital as SCI, GMCH dean Kanan Yelikar said that there are enough funds available for construction of additional wings and equipment.“A second unit of linear accelerator will soon be installed, which will reduce the waiting list to zero,” Yelikar said.Arvind Gaikwad, the officer on special duty at the hospital said that radiotherapy is provided through one unit of linear accelerator and 60-source Bhabhatron. The hospital is equipped with brachy therapy unit, CT simulator. Daily 100 to 120 patients are treated through radiation.Bhabhatron became functional on July 27 and is used to provide radiation treatment to around 40 patients daily.Considering the large number of patients coming to the hospital, PG course in radiation oncology was started in 2018, under Maharashtra University of Health Sciences (MUHS), after receiving approval from Medical Council of India. The institute also offers BSc PMT (radiology), a para medical course.Gaikwad said that the hospital engages in awareness initiatives.“We have prepared 20-22 video clips through which awareness is raised among people about prevention of cancer.
