Aurangabad: Ayushman Bharat Pradhan Mantri Jan Arogya Yojana (PMJAY), the ambitious medical insurance scheme of the central government, was rolled out in the district on Sunday along with its national launch.Initially, the scheme will be limited to government hospitals and private hospitals will be covered in the later phase. However, the ailing condition of the hospital has raised concerns over the effectiveness of the scheme. On Sunday, assembly speaker Haribhau Bagade, MP Chandrakant Khaire, chairman of Marathwada Statutory Development Board Bhagwat Karad, MLA Atul Save, among others marked the launch of the scheme in the district during a programme at the district collectorate. Selected beneficiaries were also distributed e-cards at the launch. The district health department has stated that 2.37 lakh families in Aurangabad district have been covered in the scheme. District health officer Vivek Khatgaonkar said the Ayushman Bharat scheme will be implemented along with the state government’s Mahatma Phule Jan Arogya Yojana in the district.“Each of the families in the scheme will have access to medical cover of Rs 5 lakh in a year. The beneficiary data is linked through Aadhar and one can get cashless cover for 1,350 procedures covering pre and post hospitalisation, diagnostics, medicines through biometric information in other states too,” Khatgaonkar said.Incidentally, as the first phase of the scheme is limited to government hospitals, it will be implemented only at the GMCH and the government cancer hospital. The other major government hospital in the city is district civil hospital, but it is yet to open its inpatient department. However, the GMCH is perennially suffering with lack of medicines, frequent breakdowns of diagnostic equipment, shortage of super specialists and staff. The CT scan machine of the hospital which is crucial for the cancer patients is non-functional due to technical issue. The nephrology, urology and neurology services are marred by lack of super specialists.Health activist Ravi Gaikwad stressed on the need for awareness about the scheme to rural areas and strong implementation. “Poor patient should have access to free healthcare but if they do not have facilities at government, the entire exercise is a farce,” he said.Responding to this, GMCH medical superintendent Bharat Sonawane said the hospital is in consistent persuasion of the state government for the maintenance of equipment, procurement of medicines, Rs 10 crore outstanding dues of medicines and outsourced security.Being asked about the lack of super-specialists, Sonawane said they don’t want to work with government medical colleges because of the poor pay-scale. “We have sent a request for increasing the pay-scale and incentives,” he added.
