B’luru agency gets contract for waste handling

Aurangabad: Bengaluru-based agency P Gopinatha Reddy has bagged the contract for collection and transportation of city’s waste at Rs 211 crore for seven years.The civic standing committee on Monday approved the proposal to award the contract to the Bengaluru agency as it had presented the lowest bid among the applicants.Standing committee chairman Renukadas Vaidya said the work order is expected to be released to the contractor by the end of this month. This calculation is based on the city’s daily average waste generation of 450 metric tonnes,” said Vaidya.According to the resolution passed by the AMC, a household will have to pay Re 1 per day, small commercial units Rs 730 annually and hotels and bigger commercial units will be charged Rs 10 to 100 for each collection. Hence, it will take some time before the agency begins the work,” he said.Vaidya said that the agency, which has experience in working with Surat Municipal Corporation, will be collecting segregated waste from doorsteps and transport it to the processing sites at four locations,” said Vaidya.Sites at Padegaon, Chikalthana, Harsul and Sawangi have been selected for setting up centralised waste processing units and a site at Kanchanwadi is designated for establishment of biomethanation plant.The AMC in its general body meeting on August 3 had passed a resolution to impose a user fee on waste generators for its collection and the same will be collected by the agency and deposited with the AMC.“The AMC will pay the agency around Rs 30 crore annually or Rs 1800-1900 per tonne.
