Mumbai duo held at city airport with 3 kg gold bars

“The Abu Dhabi-Delhi Air India flight gets converted into a domestic flight upon reaching the national capital. Aurangabad: The Pune unit of the Directorate of Revenue Intelligence (DRI) arrested two passengers of the Delhi-Aurangabad Air India flight and seized 3kg gold from them at the airport here on Tuesday night.An officer privy to the operation said that a total of 12 pieces of foreign marked gold bars were seized from the duo. The suspects, on reaching Aurangabad, were about to be picked up by a couple of unidentified suspects, who would then take them to Mumbai by road.Officers said the suspects have admitted to have brought the gold was in the international flight of Air India from Abu Dhabi and concealed the same in a hollow cylindrical pipe beneath the seat.Revealing their modus operandi, the duo, in their statement to the security agencies, stated that during the flight to Aurangabad, they removed the gold bars from the cylindrical pipes and kept them in their hand baggage.When contacted, a senior DRI officer told TOI that the duo has been arrested and that they have confessed to possessing, carrying and concealing gold illegally. The suspects had brought the gold on the international flight.”The officer said that one of the suspects went to the economy class while the other to the business class in the Delhi-Aurangabad domestic flight.The passengers were identified as Fayyum Shaikh and Jawed Ismail Shaikh, both in their 30s and residents of Mumbai.When contacted, DRI authorities said that officers from their Pune regional unit had coordinated with the customs department in Aurangabad after receiving specific information regarding possible smuggling of gold.Preliminary probe has revealed that the two were carriers and paid around Rs 50,000 for each trip for smuggling gold bars.
