Nanded teacher returns Rs 6L jewellery found on train

“I was shell-shocked when I came to know that I lost my jewellery purse in the train. Aurangabad: Premsingh Chavan, a teacher from Nanded, was felicitated by the Railways recently for honestly returning a bag containing jewellery he found on a train.Chavan, while travelling on Nandigram Express on November 9, found a purse containing jewellery worth Rs 6 lakh. Responding to the felicitation, Chavan appreciated the wholehearted cooperation offered by railway authorities in locating the owner of the gold ornaments. He handed it over to the railway authorities. As nobody came, I handed it over to railway authorities at Kinwat,” recalled Chavan.Chavan approached the station master to hand over the purse.

He handed it over to the railway authorities. Incidentally, it was later revealed that the jewellery belong to Sayali Rathod, who was a student of Chavan, a physics teacher.On Saturday, Chavan said that he came across a small white-coloured purse containing gold ornaments while travelling in coach B-1 of the Mumbai-Nagpur Nandigram Express.“I did not have a blanket for my seat. I pulled one from a nearby empty seat only to find one purse under it. I realised that it must be carrying some valuables and someone must have forgotten it. I waited for someone to come looking for the purse. As nobody came, I handed it over to railway authorities at Kinwat,” recalled Chavan.Chavan approached the station master to hand over the purse. All necessary formalities were completed in presence of the railway protection force.The purse was opened in their presence before a joint report was prepared. It was found that the purse contained seven gold ornaments, including a necklace, bracelet, a ring, earrings, a few gold chains and mangalsutra, among other items.“With the help of commercial department, the passengers who had travelled in the coach were contacted to find out if anyone had lost a purse. Eventually, we were able to trace the owner of the purse,” SCR authorities said.Rathod, a dentist from Mumbai, had forgotten the purse in the train. “I was shell-shocked when I came to know that I lost my jewellery purse in the train. Both, me and my husband, had little hope of getting it back,” she said.Rathod was handed over the jewellery and the purse by the railway authorities after they produced necessary proofs of ownership. It was a double delight for her as it was a former teacher who had found and returned her purse.On Saturday, she met Chavan to express her gratitude. “Chavan sir taught us physics in junior college. He was one of our favourite teachers. Once again he proved why he was not only the best teacher but a very fine human being,” said 32-year-old said.Trikalagya Rabha, divisional railway manager of Nanded division of the SCR, honoured Chavan by offering him a certificate of appreciation and bouquet. Responding to the felicitation, Chavan appreciated the wholehearted cooperation offered by railway authorities in locating the owner of the gold ornaments.
