Theft of water released for Jayakwadi sparks warning

It only depends upon the GMIDC how effectively it carries out a crackdown against unruly elements,” he said.Section 26 of the MWRRA Act 2005 states: “Whoever fails to comply with any order or direction given under this Act, within such time as may be specified in the said order or direction or contravenes or attempts to contravene or abets the contravention of any of the provisions of this Act or any rules or regulations made thereunder shall be punishable with imprisonment for a term which may extend to six months or with fine, which may extend to ten times of the annual water charges or with both in respect of each offence.” Aurangabad: The water flowing from upstream dams to Jayakwadi dam has been illegally obstructed using Kolhapuri Type (KT) weirs in parts of Ahmednagar and Aurangabad districts so that it can be used for irrigation and other purpose.Admitting that water is indeed being stolen, the Godavari Maharashtra Irrigation Development Corporation (GMIDC) has warned people, including public representatives, against such practices.The GMIDC authorities said water is being obstructed illegally at Kopargaon in Ahmednagar district and Vaijapur in Aurangabad district.“As per our information, needles of KT weirs at Wanjargaon, Khanapur and Kamlapur have been put into operation for obstructing the water released from upstream dams of Jayakwadi dam located in Nashik region,” a senior GMIDC official on Sunday.The official added that the water release had taken place from Darna and Mukane group of dams, which has not reached the desired distance yet due to such illegal obstruction.In its latest public notification, the GMIDC has brought to the notice of different stakeholders that creating hurdles in the release of water towards Jayakwadi dam would be contempt of Supreme Court.“Stern action will be taken against anyone showing scant regard for the directive of the apex court and also creating law and order situation in the process of water release,” the notification issued in the name of GMIDC executive director Ajay Kohirkar reads.Water rights activist Abhijit Dharnorkar said the GMIDC should take stern action against those obstructing the process of release of water as per the formula of equitable distribution.
