At end of Smart City meeting, one big pile of garbage to clear

Aurangabad: Aurangabad Municipal Corporation, which coined the tagline ‘Majha kachra, majhi javabdari’ (My waste, my responsibility) ended up generating a large quantity of garbage after a day’s workshop held on Saturday. Additional commissioner Santosh Kawde of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation admitted that the use of plastic could have been avoided. Activist Kishor Pathak, who was one of the participants, said a civic body grappling with a garbage crisis could have been more thoughtful.Pankaj Shakkarwar, a professional, said the municipal corporation needs to lead by example. Lunch in plates was not possible as people were being served food between sessions, he said. Salad was in a plastic bowl and there were wafers in a plastic pouch.

Food and snacks were served in plastic and paper disposable plates to around 350 people.Aurangabad Smart City Development Corporation Ltd (ASCDCL) and Marathwada Environment Care Cluster together organised ‘Aurangabad First’, a day’s workshop at Mahatma Gandhi Mission titled Manthan. Individuals, NGOs, experts, media people and students turned up to discuss ideas for the implementation of Smart City projects in heritage conservation, tourism, housing and urban planning, health, education, IT, water supply, environment and sanitation.Food packed in paper boxes was served at lunch; in the paper box was a sandwich wrapped in a plastic sheath. Salad was in a plastic bowl and there were wafers in a plastic pouch. Activist Kishor Pathak, who was one of the participants, said a civic body grappling with a garbage crisis could have been more thoughtful.Pankaj Shakkarwar, a professional, said the municipal corporation needs to lead by example. “Such programmes are a good opportunity to set a precedent,” he said. Additional commissioner Santosh Kawde of the Aurangabad Municipal Corporation admitted that the use of plastic could have been avoided.
