Aurangabad: Used sanitary napkins thrown in toilets and washrooms by a section of female passengers once again choked the drainage system of the Aurangabad railway station, spreading a stink on the premises, on Tuesday. The chocked drainage line started leaking from one of the covers near the railway parcel office, prompting the local railway staff to take the help of the local civic body to clean the line. The drainage water was oozing out near the entrance and was flowing up to the parking area, causing difficulties to vehicle owners besides being an ugly sight for tourists entering the city, including foreigners. Aurangabad Station master Laxmikant Jakhade said the drainage line often gets choked up, mainly due to the dumping of used sanitary napkins. “We have installed one sanitary napkin disposal machine in the women’s toilet at the railway station. However, there are few takers for the facility. The napkins are dumped in toilets and washrooms, causing the drainage line to get blocked quite often,” he said.Jakhade said that plastic bottles, plastic cups and food wrappers are also found in the choked drainage lines but sanitary napkins seem to be the main culprit. “We are going to install one more sanitary napkin disposal machine at the railway station soon. However, the question remains of a general lack of awareness about the ill-effects of the unsafe disposal of these napkins, among female passengers,” he said.According to railway staff, some women passengers wrap sanitary pads in a polythene bag or paper and throw it along with garbage while many others flush them down the toilets. Aurangabad railway station witnesses a footfall of nearly 15,000 passengers per day, including foreign tourists. The ‘A’ category station had secured an abysmal 179th rank in a third party audit on cleanliness facilitated by the Indian Railways last year, with experts also blaming a large section of passengers for a lack of cleanliness sense.Railway activist Raj Somani said that the South Central Railway (SCR) should increase the number of sanitary pad disposal machines at the Aurangabad railway station. “Only one machine cannot cater to the needs of scores of female passengers. At least half a dozen machines must be installed along with information boards for the knowledge of the general public,” he said.Somani also said that the SCR administration should lay a new drainage line in some parts of the railway station premises. “The footfall at Aurangabad railway station has increased over the last decade and there is a need to improve the basic infrastructure, including the underground drainage lines, which are quite old,” he said. When contacted, SCR authorities said some civic work related to drainage has been already proposed at Aurangabad railway station, which will be expedited in the near future.
