3 booked for confining boy over unpaid school fees

Aurangabad: Latur police have booked two members belonging to the management of a private school as well as a staffer for allegedly holding back an eight-year-old boy in the school for allegedly not paying the fees for a year.The incident took place on Friday at the school in Udgir tehsil of Latur district, about 320km from here.The school has refuted the allegations, saying that at least a dozen students stayed back in the school after the van that ferried them developed a technical snag on Friday.A case has been registered under section 342 of the Indian Penal Code (wrongful confinement) and also sections of the Juvenile Justice Care and Protection Act. Latur superintendent of police Rajendra Mande told TOI, “Based on the complaint lodged by the boy’s father, an offence has been registered against two members of the school management and a clerk.”Mande said no one has been arrested so far and the matter was being probed. “The allegation that the boy was not allowed to go home as his parents failed to pay his fees is serious in nature,” he added.The boy’s father told police that due to financial difficulties, he failed to pay Rs 6,000 last year and Rs 12,000 this year due to which the school management did not allow his son to go home.When his son did not come home after a couple of hours of his school getting over, he went to the school. There he was questioned about not paying the school fees. Perturbed by the incident, he lodged a police complaint.The president and the secretary of the education society that runs the school, refuted the allegations. The president said, “On Friday, the school van ferrying the students broke down and the driver said that it would take one to two hours to repair it. The secretary stayed back at the school and informed all the students.”After a while, parents of eight students came and took their kids home.
