Aurangabad: As many as four goats were attacked by a pack of stray dogs in Nagsen colony in the city and succumbed to the injuries on late Friday night. This incident comes within days of a 10-year-old being mauled by stray dogs on November 5.According to Mohammed Yahya, a resident of Nagsen Colony near Khas Gate, his family reared goats for a living and kept the livestock in the compound in their house.“On Friday night, while we were asleep, a pack of 15-20 dogs entered the compound and attacked the goats tied there. On hearing the commotion, we woke up immediately and came to shoo the dogs. We had a tough time in driving the dogs out of the compound,” said Yahya who now owns seven goats, including one which has sustained injuries. In the meantime, the dogs had already attacked five goats. “Four of the goats received serious injuries and succumbed. One goat is still injured,” said the owner. The family estimates that it has incurred losses upto Rs 25,000.The incident is yet to wake Aurangabad Municipal Corporation (AMC) from its slumber as no one from the civic body’s dog canine control section responded to the family’s calls and the stray dogs are still at loose.Yahya said that the dogs came for the goats again on Saturday night and that they posed a threat to children and residents living in the locality.Shaikh Shaheed, AMC’s supervisor for the veterinary clinic at Central Naka who looks after the residents’ complaints, said that he did not receive any complaint from Nagsen Colony. He further said that even if he had received a complaint, there was little that could have been done.“All we can do is sterilise the dogs if they haven’t undergone sterilisation before. After that, we will have to release them to their original location. This is also in line with the Government of India’s animal birth control programme,” said Shahid.Vijaykumar Fulsoundar, veterinary doctor of Blue Cross Society working for AMC, said that sterilisation was the only answer to bring the population of stray dogs under control. “The civic body needs to work on improving the infrastructure for better implementation of the ABC programme which will curtail the stray dog menace.”Last week, Noor-e-Mujassam Pinjari (10), a resident of Barudgar Nala, died while undergoing treatment for dog bite.
